Kathy - Lucas's Story

Life Hi All, Not that anyone is interested, but Bridgette Lott, Dale Guess and I went through Jr & Sr High together. We were all three poor and didn't fit into any of the elite cirlcles or clicks, but we didn't care because we were loving life! We Three that cruised all of the krystal and other fast food drive-in's dinking coffee, riding main street and flirting, but never straying from our upbringing. Bridgette and I shared an apartment after gradaution while Jimmy was in Nam and I worked at Prudential as dictaphone operators for a year. She married a guy in the Navy, I "Dear John'ed' Jimmy, and did the same - huge mistake; Dale wrote to Jim in Nam and helped salvage my relatinship. He came home from Nam and married me. We moved to MD after he returned from Nam, but he was too traumatized from the war to be around people, and I didn't feel like I deserved a pretty wedding, so we went to the justice of the peace in Greensboro, NC. A year and a half later, we had fraternal little boy and girls twins that would have survived today, but technology just wasn't up to par, so our pecous little girl lived only one day, while little Jimmy made it two. We buried them at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. I craweled into a whole for two years and wanted to crawl into their caskets with them and die, but God wouldn't let me go. No one one hire a Nam vet after the war, so Jimmy re-enlisted and off to Germany we went. It was the best time in our lives, I got pregnant with my second daughter, and we traveled all over Germany; it was great, romatic and a three-year honeymoon like nothing that I had ever dreamed of. We knew we wanted another precious baby as the experience was a miracle that we couldn't wait to embrace again; little Richard was born 13 months later in the same Nuremburg, Germany, Army hospital that Wendy was born in. We lived on the economy and rented basement apartments from the Germans for a couple of ears, learned street German and their wonderful holiday customs; we later moved into military housing, and traveled all over Germany, Switzerland and Austria. We came back to the US for two years to Augusta, GA, (which we loved and so did the children), then back to German for another two year unaccompanied tour which meant that he was never there; he was gone fo months at a time in school after school and out in the field playing war games. I had both babies, lived on the economy, had no car, little money, and life was pretty tough. The were preparing him for Officers' Candidated School to be a Warrant Officer, but I was young and foolish, and all I wanted was my husband home with my children and me. Huge mistake!!! He got out in '83 four years short of retirement because they sent us ...Expand for more
back to Germany and I refused to go - the medical facilities stunk! Jimmy had never wanted me to work as his generation thought that women should stay at home and the men be the bread winners. I could keep ten children in a home day care, but not return to Prudential until I got fed up with that at went to work at the Federal Building for the Army Corps of Eng. in Jax., while he did a two year stint on the Star Wars Project for the Naval Research Lab in DC in Diego Garcia. Life got better financially, he later started having heart attacks, I started college in Jax at 45, and we moved to NC where we were both born while my family remained in Jax and his in NC. I have always taken vets in as my late WW II Normandy Vet father taught me to do, and worked with vet groups and Congessman Howard Coble ( precious man of the people for three yrs in military & vet affairs for three yrs until they discovered that I had three small brain aneurysims which caused me to medically retire. I am a professional still life photographer & spent three wks in Nam in '96 on a photgraphic journey so the vets that wanted to return, but couldn't either financially, physically or emotionally resulting in two huge photographic exhibits with authentic memoribilia. I also spent the last 12 yrs adopting vet homeless shelters in ten NC cities and providing annual Christmsas Stockings & gifts for them and about 135 gifts for vets treated at a local vet center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from their war exp. I invite you to do the same in your communities. I have turned the two veteran missions over to a wonderful womens' Christian groups and will focus now on writing a coffee table book of my photos and stories and making CD's of the photos to provide them free to my homeless and traumatized vets on Ebay and the internet. I am blessed with a gift of automatic writing to help the police find Amber Alert children and have joined two college groups to further develop my gifts. Loved my high school experiences although I never felt like I fit in, spent my senior years preparing for business administration work which sure helped to support my husband, our children and me. Loved the two Ribault Trojan '67 Reunions my husband and I attended; time has a way of mellowing out people and eliminating the need and stress of forming isolated groups. We had a wonderful time thanks to our incredible reunion committee and our precious friend who left us in late '07 much, much too soon. He and our other classmates are dearly missed. God bless those we lost in service to our country and the world or because of their experiences in the military. May their families be comforted by the united love of the classmates of '67. Love in Christ, Kathy
